More: You got injured on the show?
JG: Yes, on the second to last show I ruptured a disk, and I ruptured it pretty severely. Despite my injury I danced on it that night, won the title and flew directly to New York to dance on morning shows. A week later I had the ruptured disk repaired. Since then, I am fixed.
More: Are you pain free?
JG: If you have a chronic condition there are ways to manage it. I do meditation, hypnosis, acupuncture, massage and lots of exercise. I know my pain well enough and how to help it.
More: Is that why you got involved with the Hands-On Approach for Pain Management campaign?
JG: This list of tips is so helpful. If you are in chronic pain, go to the website. It will teach you what the symptoms are, how to know your pain patterns and how to record them in your pain journal. These are all of the things that the doctor needs to know in order to help you. Often when you are in pain you are depressed and overwhelmed. If you go to the website PartnersAgainstPain.com, it lists the things you can do to prepare yourself for your appointment with a doctor.
More: How did you get through the difficult times when the pain was severe?
JG: I have had terrible flare-ups, like when I ruptured my disk. That kind of pain is unbearable.
More: How did you hide this from your husband [actor Clark Gregg] and your daughter [Stella]?
JG: I didn’t hide it. Very often I would say, “I need to go lie down because my neck is hurting. I am going to go heat up my heating pad and take some Advil. Stella, will you go watch TV for a little bit so I can go lie down for 20 minutes?”
More: Your husband must be so happy now that his wife is no longer suffering.
JG: He says I am a completely different person.
More: How has your life changed now that you don’t have this dark cloud hanging over you?
JG: I got my problem corrected and that correction made a huge difference.
More: Has partnering with this campaign been therapeutic?
JG: It has been therapeutic because nothing makes me happier than helping other people. If I can give someone the tools she needs to improve the quality of her life, that would be extremely gratifying.
More: Speaking of dancing, word on the street is there is a Dirty Dancing remake in the works.
JG: Yes, that's what I heard.
More: I also read you support it?
JG: I support my friends, and Kenny Ortega [reported to have been hired as the director] is my friend. I love him and he is super talented. They can do what they want. I am sure it will be good, interesting and something people can appreciate just like they do the old one. It doesn’t have to be that one replaces the other.
More: Some people are outraged that Hollywood wants to mess with the original. Aren’t you mad?
JG: No. It is really satisfying to me. I love it. I feel so loved and protected.
More: Will you go see the new version?
JG: Of course I will go see it.
More: While you were on DWTS you performed a routine to a song from the movie. Did you dedicate that to Patrick?
JG: Yes, I did.
