Getting Fatter? Blame Your Job

Survey finds certain careers lead to weight gain

by Lesley Kennedy • MORE.com Reporter

Yeah, we know sitting on our rear ends all day while we toil away at work can mean terrible things for our, well, rear ends. In fact, a recent study from CareerBuilder.com finds two out of five workers have put on pounds since starting their current gigs, with more than one fourth gaining a minimum of 10 pounds and 14 percent adding upwards of 20 pounds to the scale, BusinessNewsDaily reports.

And, it turns out, what you do for a living can make weight gain more likely. The 10 jobs in which you’re likeliest to gain weight, according to the survey, are travel agent, lawyer/judge, social worker, teacher, artist/designer/architect, administrative assistant, physician, protective service worker (think police, firefighters), marketing/public relations professional and information technology pro professional.

Why those occupations? The biggie: sitting parked at a desk most hours of the day, the survey finds. Also to blame, according to BusinessNewsDaily, are stress eating, being so busy that you skip meals, celebrating in the office, feeling pressured to eat food your coworkers bring to work and that age-old fiend: the office candy jar.

Guess next time you start a job, you should negotiate a personal trainer with that benefits package. Or, at the least, steer clear of Brenda from accounting. Her homemade goodies will get you every time.
