Happy Leap Day!

It’s a weird day for births, a legendary day for proposals

by Lesley Kennedy • MORE.com Reporter

Leapin’ lizards! It’s leap day, that once-every-four-years bonus day that’s really weird for babies born on February 29—but pretty exciting for women anxious to pop the question to their sweeties.

First, the baby thing. The Los Angeles Times reports folks born on leap day (that’s a 1 in 1,461 chance, FYI) usually celebrate on February 28 or March 1. Among them? Rapper Ja Rule, singer/actress/TV personality Dinah Shore and actor/underwear model Antonio Sabato Jr.

And then, the marry-me thing: The Washington Post reports that, according to Irish legend, when a woman proposes on leap day, the guy has to say yes. See 2010’s rom-com Leap Year, starring Amy Adams.

So, there you go. Instead of thinking of today as a day of work without extra pay, think of babies and engagements and consider this an extra day to laugh and love. We’ll leap to that.

When I was a kid, the girls had to ask the boys to dance with us on Leap Day. It was very empowering.
