It's 2017, and while the rest of the world seems unaware of the year, at least the fashion industry knows it's the 21st century. Halima Aden, the 19-year-old Somali-American former Miss Minnesota pageant contestant, has just been signed to the world's top modeling agency, IMG Models.
I signed with the top modeling agency in the WORLD and still wore my hijab as my crown. Don't ever change yourself ..Change the game❤️ I can't thank @evelienjoos, @carineroitfeld , @ronnie_hart , and @benperreira enough for believing in me. Thank you so much @usastatepageants for opening this door ❤️ I am so excited to join the @imgmodels family and spread the message that diversity IS beauty 💞
After Aden rocked a burkini and her hijab at the Miss Minnesota pageant, she garnered national attention for diversifying beauty pageant stereotypes and for shining a positive light on Muslim women. And some big names in the fashion industry were definitely watching Aden. She recently walked the runway for Kanye West's Season 5 Yeezy line during New York Fashion Week dressed in her hijab.
And Carine Roitfeld, the former editor of French Vogue, recently featured Aden in her CR fashion book.
The future is undeniably bright for Aden's modeling career and she's surely inspiring young women everywhere with her uncompromising values. At IMG, she's joining the ranks of other celebrities and models such as Millie Bobby Brown, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Kate Moss, Karlie Kloss and hundreds more of influential women, making her signing all the more important and poignant.
We wish Aden all the best for her career and we cannot wait to see her walking every top runway in the world!
