Call Yourself 'Creative' on LinkedIn? Join the Club

Networking site lists the most overused words in professional profiles.

Trying to create some buzz around your professional networking profile? Quit telling people how creative, organizational and effective you are. Those words are as worn out as your credit card from all that holiday shopping.

Now, we’re not exactly advising you to change your LinkedIn profile to include words such as “fierce,” “almighty” or “hardcore,” but you might want to figure out some new terms to set yourself apart from the rest of the job-hunting pack.

Professional networking site LinkedIn released a list today of the most overused buzz words and phrases in its more than 135 million member profiles, and “creative,” “organizational” and “effective” rank first through third, respectively.

Rounding out the top 10: “extensive experience,” “track record,” “motivated," “innovative,” “problem solving,” “communication skills” and “dynamic.”

“Competition for opportunities can be fierce, so craft your LinkedIn Profile and resume to stand out from the professional pack,” Nicole Williams, LinkedIn’s connection director and author of the best-selling book Girl on Top, says in a release. “Banish buzzwords from your profile. Use language that illustrates your unique professional accomplishments and experiences. Give concrete examples of results you’ve achieved whenever possible and reference attributes that are specific to you.”

On second thought, if you are in fact fierce, there may be an employer out there who'd like to hear about it. Just stay away from “bootylicious.” Unless you’re actually Beyoncé, that probably isn't going to work out.
