Study: Lose Weight Cutting Carbs 2 Days a Week

Researchers say women lost more pounds by intermittently cutting carbs than by counting calories.

Holiday cheer is weighing heavy on your waistline, but you shun the Atkins and Dukan diets of the world for fear of never tasting a delicious morsel of bread, pasta or muffin again? What if we told you that you had to go carb-free only two days a week to see a difference on the scale?

Things just got interesting.

Today reports a new study out of the U.K. finds women who went carb-free two days out of seven and ate regularly the rest of the time lost an average of nine pounds, while women on a 1,500-calorie daily diet dropped just five.

“We came up with the idea of an intermittent low-carb diet because it enables people to still have foods that are very satiating," Michelle Harvie, lead author of the study, tells the news show. “Also, there’s a lot of evidence from other studies showing that restricting carbohydrates has the same effect as restricting energy.”

OK, we’re biting. So what’s the plan? Harvie tells Today you should opt for protein and healthy fats on days when you have a 50g carb limit. One piece of fruit is allowed, as are nuts, leafy green veggies, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, broccoli, eggplant and cauliflower, according to the show.

And the five other days of a week, just try to be sensible. Wait—so if we dine on eggs, cheese and bacon Mondays and Wednesdays, we can’t simply gorge on cookies, chips and spaghetti the rest of the time? Where's the study for that? That's a diet plan we could commit to.
