Political sex scandals seem to be as common as candidates taking advantage of photo ops featuring them kissing babies or flipping pancakes. The latest accusation: Marianne Gingrich, Newt Gingrich’s second wife, said on Nightline Thursday that her then-husband, now campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination, had asked her for an “open marriage.”

The New York Times reports Gingrich also told her that he and Callista Bisek (whom he would marry in 2000) were having an affair. Bisek was then a congressional aide.

“I said to him, ‘We’ve been married a long time,’ ” Marianne Gingrich told Nightline. “And he said, ‘Yes, but you want me all to yourself. Callista doesn’t care what I do.’ ”

Marianne Gingrich said they soon divorced, after 18 years of marriage, according to the Times.

So will this turn scandal or be squelched? Keep your eye on the polls.
