Embracing Myself

A series of difficulties, including a child with cancer and a divorce, led her to grateful, confident place.

I thought I would start off 2013 with something I’ve dreamed of doing for a long time, but never had the courage to reach out and try. I am a 44-year-old mother of three teenage boys. I have survived my youngest son having cancer at the age of two (he is awesome now — thank God), a public divorce (because of my ex-husband's job), followed by his suicide (also very public), and then to top it off a flood in which we lost everything we owned. I am now married to a wonderful man, who is considerably younger than myself and who loves me just the way I am. I am strong, resilient and determined to do whatever I can possibly do to make my boys' lives, my husband’s life, and the lives of those around me the best it can possibly be. That said — as almost any mom and wife can attest to — we sit on the back burner. My request is a simple one: I want to have a beautiful picture and story done of the resiliency of women to appear in a magazine that doesn’t epitomize women, but honors and embraces their strength and beauty.

My husband’s disdain for magazines that give women unrealistic ideologies of how to look and be, coupled with my love for magazines, led me to MORE. I am thrilled to find a magazine I can identify with and not feel bad about myself while reading.  I’ve never seen myself as beautiful, but I’ve seen myself as O.K. I believe there are millions of women out there who feel the same as me. I don’t want to be a cover girl. I just want what is inside to shine, in one lovely, polished picture. My boys always tell me how incredible they think I am for getting them through what life has handed us. I would like them to have a something to keep forever that embraces what they always tell me.

Thanks for indulging me.  And thank you for providing MORE for women just like me.
