At 41, I finished my bachelors degree and graduated Summa Cum Laude. I had two associate degrees, but I really needed my bachelors to apply for the jobs that I wanted. I worked full-time as a billing clerk and went to school at night to complete my bachelors degree. In 16 months, working full-time and at times carrying almost a full-time school load, I graduated and I couldn’t have been prouder of myself, especially knowing that I was graduating Summa Cum Laude, which was a total surprise to me. I am now working full-time as an Investigator in our county’s Public Defender Office, something that I never would have been able to do without my bachelors degree. I am so happy that I decided to finish my degree. At times, I thought, "oh…I’m too old, I don’t have the time, I don’t have the money", but when you just make up your mind to do it, you usually find a way to do it. That old saying, "Where there’s a will, there’s a way" and there usually is. Another saying that I love to repeat is Nike’s slogan, "Just Do It", sometimes you just have to do it. Finishing my bachelors completed me as a person and has opened so many more doors for me. It is something I will have forever and something that no one will ever be able to take away from me, and I now have a very beautiful framed degree hanging on my office wall.
