When the Teacher Became the Student

How one woman changed her approach to weight loss and exercise and improved her health.

As a physical educator and ADHD coach, I am very aware of the difficulty in making behavior changes.  Many of my students and clients struggle for many months and even years to change a single behavior. I'm no different from them. This past spring I made a decision to change two behaviors — one is a behavior that I've intended to change for at least 20 years, and the other is a modification to the type of exercise I was doing.

The first behavior had to do with exercise. I've taught physical education for 32 years and have been dedicated to exercise on my own at least six days a week for most of those 32 years. However, as I've gotten older I realize that long, slow cardio exercise (which I've always done) will not be as beneficial for weight loss as high intensity interval training (HIIT). So my first behavior change was to purchase Insanity®, a series of DVDs that are described as "max interval training."

The second behavior, and the one that has persisted for so many years, was to become more disciplined in monitoring my caloric intake. So I signed up for Weight Watchers® and began attending meetings. The point system associated with Weight Watchers is very simple, and I monitor and track my points on my iPhone. I have known about Weight Watchers for many years, but I just thought I could monitor calories on my own. Finally after so many years I realized that I need the discipline of a program and the support that I get from attending WW meetings!

I felt compelled to write this short story because I know that many women my age struggle with attempting to maintain some balance in their lives. We have so much to do and so little time, and often exercise and eating right are two things that we don't take time to do. I find that with this exercise I get a great workout, and it's only about 40 minutes long and that with WW I can track my points quickly on my phone.

It's taken a while to get to the point where I just made a decision to change my behaviors. I was influenced somewhat by some students of mine who talked about Insanity and also by a friend who was going to Weight Watchers. I mention this because I realize that when the student is ready the teacher(s) will show up. Then it's up to me to decide to change!
