So let me start by telling you what you don’t need in order to begin a career transition and do work you love …
You don’t need lots of money.
You don’t need to know exactly what you want.
You don’t need a lot of free time.
You don’t need an expansive network of friends and colleagues.
You don’t need a new set of skills or talents.
What do you need?
You need self-esteem.
You need to believe in yourself and in your career change so much that you know you’ll do whatever it takes to make it happen. When you have high self-esteem, you figure out where to get the money to start your own business. You figure out the steps of your career path as you take them. You find the time to devote to your efforts. You reach out to new people—strangers, friends of friends, long lost colleagues—and grow your circle of connections. You figure out what you need to learn and you go learn it.
When you don’t believe in yourself and your ability to do work you love that pays what you want, you stay stuck. I’ve worked with countless clients who’ve told me they would switch careers right now if they could only figure out what they wanted to switch to. Over time, I’ve discovered that not knowing what they want is not the problem. The problem is not believing they could realize their dreams in the first place—no matter what those dreams were.
If you’re wondering why you’re still stuck, ask yourself in your heart of hearts if you believe you can have what you want. If the answer is ‘no’ take whatever steps you can (even baby steps count) to change your mindset so that you can begin to believe in the one person who can make your dreams come true.
