5 Genius Ways to Make Money on the Side

Sometimes your salary isn't enough for that new Kate Spade bag, no matter how badly you want it. Don't fret, with these five ways to make money, celebs won't be the only ones getting rich from their side jobs.

If you know how to work a computer or an app on your phone, you can easily rake in some dough with one (or more) of these five ways to make money.

1. Etsy Selling
Your favorite DIY projects can actually make you quite a bit of money thanks to Etsy.

How it works: Etsy revolutionized the DIY business. Instead of crafters lugging their creations to shows and events, now they can sell from home. And so can you. Consumers want unique products that make a statement, especially in this media age. Take advantage of it and create your own store on Etsy.

How to start: First find what you're good at. Do you like making jewelry or are you more of a home decor wizard? Even if you love creating pieces of art on your computer, there's a demand for it. Once you find your skill, create some pieces, snap some pics and head to Etsy.com to become a seller.

Why it's genius: You know what you're good at, this simply provides you a platform to show it. A lot places require high finder fees, but Etsy only takes 3.5 percent from your transactions. They also have several tools to help you maximize your business.

Tip: Search current Etsy listings to find a product gap. Center your craft around this gap for lower market competition. Also, be sure to utilize social media (especially Pinterest) to get your products seen by consumers.

2. Blogging
One of the most popular forms of online income, blogging is a great (and fun way) to make some extra cash.

How it works: This form is a little more complicated, and requires investment, but you can blog about anything. From food to fashion, or fitness to travel, the options are endless. If you want to make more money, fashion or beauty tends to be easier since you can help sell products for stores.

How to start: Choose something you're passionate about and create a free blog with Blogger or WordPress, and be sure you have a killer name. Start building your following by posting a few times a week. Be selective, but smart about your content. Once your following is built you can start asking to collaborate with companies to create commission. (Check out How to Become a Fashion Blogger for more tips on getting started).

Why it's genius: This is a great way to take advantage the Internet. Plus you get to wear cute outfits and post about them. Everyone wants fashion/beauty advice so if you know what you're doing (and can take stunning Instagram photos) then give it a shot.

Tip: Utilize LiketoKnow.it to link your posts to shopping sites to help generate more sales. Sales = commission.

3. Freelance Writing
If you're killing the blogosphere you may want to consider freelance writing. Tons of companies (including us!) have writers who work from home.

How it works: Freelance writers get paid per article. You don't have to go into work, meaning if you already have a job, this is a way to make some money from home. Yay!

How to start: Simply do your research, finding companies with freelance openings that also fit your writing voice. If you want a job in the media industry, be sure to include published samples of writing (hence the blogging). Unless you have a journalism/English degree, in which case you probably have some great clips.

Why it's genius: You get paid to write about whatever topics interest you. Plus, you get to decide your salary. How many articles do you want to write? Well that depends on how much money you want to make.

Tip: Be sure to get a contract from the employer. You want to make sure you both understand the terms of agreement to avoid any awkward situations.

4. Website Testing
That's right, you can get paid for simply testing a website and providing feedback. Seriously, it's so easy!

How it works: Companies want feedback on their website. Is it user-friendly? Do consumers like the aesthetic? Well, the website, UserTesting.com, connects these companies with consumers by paying people to review them. It takes about 15 minutes to complete an adequate test and thorough survey, but you can potentially make $30/hour!

How to start: All you need to do is sign up on their website, download the software and start reviewing sites. As you go, the software will record your clicks, page scrolls ect. Then you answer a few questions and bam. Pay day.

Why it's genius: You get to help make the Internet a happier place for people and you get paid. Besides, you definitely have opinions, so get money for them!

Tip: Create a steady income by scheduling specific times (an hour or so) to review sites. Then you'll know how much you make per week and can keep it consistent.

5. Uber Driving
Sure you've probably heard about Uber, but did you ever consider driving for it? No? Well you should.

How it works: Uber is like a taxi, only more personalized. Through the app, customers request a car and Uber finds the closest one. But a system like this needs a driver with their own vehicle, that's where you come in. Uber pays weekly and lets you set your own schedule.

How to start: Head to their website Uber.com to sign up. After that, there's a brief interview and a car review process, but then you can get driving.

Why it's genius: First of all, Uber offers people a safe option when they don't have a D.D. *claps for that*. But for you, it provides a chance to utilize your navigational skills and make around $20/hour (or more) by simply helping others.

Tip: Always carry plastic bags in your car. You don't want a customer to ruin your upholstery. *shudders*

Of course making money on the side is great, but if you want to make the most of it you need to learn how to save it. Follow these budget tips to achieve financial success in no time.
