For more than 60 years Archie fans have wondered whether Archie would choose Betty or Veronica…..

Betty, the blonde, all American sweet girl next door who would do anything for Archie’s attentions OR Veronica, the dark-haired rich girl who always made Archie work for her attention.

And now we know: Archie has chosen Veronica. He has apparently, after more than 60 years, graduated from Riverdale High School and asked for Veronica’s hand in marriage.

Thrilling? Not for me. I will not be sending a card or checking their registry. I am not happy. Veronica could have anyone or anything she wanted. Betty just wanted Archie…but that was not to be.

For years all the “regular girls,” though Betty is beautiful in a Katherine Heigl kind of way (and she aint regular), have related to Betty…who will, thanks to the writers of the Archie comics, now be the “girl who didn’t get the guy.” What’s the message?

What are they saying to us girls who grew up thinking ourselves more Betty than Veronica, more Maryann than Ginger and unsure whether Wilma or Betty was sexier? Is it really all the “stuff” that matters? The money? The sex? What about brains and what is in your heart? Big Ethel deserves a great guy too.

What will become of Betty? Remember, there weren’t a lot of “good catches” at Riverdale? Jughead? Reggie Mantle? Moose Mason? And on an unrelated note, who will Miss Grundy teach now that the 10 students are graduating?

What kind of career will Archie have? Perhaps Mr. Cooper, Veronica’s dad, has invited him into the family business? That would explain a lot.

Betty, you can do better than Archie…and you must do it for all of us.
