She Wanted What Backstage?!

Guess who’s a bigger diva-Barbra, J.Lo or Mariah?

Barbra Streisand

Someone’s got an entourage. For her 2006 tour, Babs’s camp required 5 living room sets ("fabric covered-no vinyl please") and 150 folding chairs. Security was also of major concern, with detailed instructions about monitoring the venue, the need for a police K9 inspection, and even a security personnel dress code ("neatly dressed in dark jackets, blazers, or sweaters. No tee-shirts at all please"). We like a diva who sweats the details. Click here for a look at the document displayed by The Smoking Gun.

Sheryl Crow

From the looks of this tour contract, Crow appreciates local color. Among the requests for her band are local beer, local homemade hors d’oeuvres for 8, and "6 postcards of local interest with stamps." Also on Crow’s must list: - a bowl of tuna salad with red onions, light on the mayo – a loaf of good crusty wheat bread – a packet of dissolving vitamin tablets – 8 pairs of black cotton gym socks -1 bar of soap Click here for a look at the document displayed by The Smoking Gun.

Whitney Houston

Houston’s currently on a comeback world tour. We wonder how many of these requirements (from a 2004 contract) are still in effect-because, you know, there are only so many crab legs and Butterfingers you can eat in a lifetime: - whole white milk – Butterfingers – Raisinets – assortment of cinnamon raisin, salt, plain, pumpernickel and sourdough bagels – cream cheese – PB&J (Welch’s Grape Jelly, please) – crab legs – sweet and sour chicken or shrimp – vegetable spring rolls Click here for a look at the document displayed by The Smoking Gun.

Janet Jackson

Miss Jackson has a thing for cleanliness. In two contracts featured on The Smoking Gun, she asked for all rooms to be odor-free and a dry cleaner to be available the morning and afternoon of each show day, ready for approximately 30 pieces of wardrobe. Her dressing room was to have indirect lighting, an unrestricted phone number for her private use and a large arrangement of tulips, roses, gardenias and lilies. Oh, and plenty of soda ("we drink a lot of diet"). When those sodas are drained, she’s big on recycling; and she asks that any excess provisions be given to a nearly Food Bank. Diana Krall

Healthy eating and good vino (mostly red) are clearly priorities for Krall. Along with providing a 40-option wine list (which we’d try on her recommendation alone), she asked for the following on her 2007 tour: - no-sugar-added juices – whole almonds – non-acidic fruits – non-dairy, wheat and gluten free meal choices – Nestle’s "Good Start" baby formula (her twins were born in 2006) – one roll of Tums or Rolaids Also: a yoga room, large enough for five people lying down. With a very clean floor. Click here for a look at the document displayed by The Smoking Gun.

Faith Hill

When Hill’s on tour with hubby Tim McGraw, the couple seems to enjoy an elaborate tailgate atmosphere: Their contract requests a tented "compound" at the bus parking area, complete with banquet table and chairs and carpet or Astro Turf. In her dressing room, she likes a floor plant and a fresh flower arrangement-but no lilies! Click here for a look at the document displayed by The Smoking Gun.

Jennifer Lopez

Even at the recording of a cover of Marvin Gaye’s "What’s Going On" for charity, J.Lo had a lot of "personal preferences." The decor was to be all white, from the drapes and the couches to the candles, tables and the tablecloths covering them. For snacking, she requested: - green seedless grapes – papaya – apple pie a la mode – raspberry, lemon and iced tea Snapple – honey peanut Balance bars And don’t even thinking about bringing in apple, grape or tomato juice. Could it be concerns about staining all that white fabric? Click here for a look at the document displayed by The Smoking Gun.

Tina Turner

Turner seems refreshingly chill about her backstage needs; she’s even referred to as Tina and not "the Artist" in her contract rider. Her dressing-room beverage requirements are laid out as follows: - Gatorade (orange and lemon-lime) – Coke and Diet Coke – whole milk and chocolate milk – Pelligrino sparkling water, distilled water and room-temperature Evian water – plus organic uncut lemons for tea and a small squeeze Honey Bear After the show, apparently, she likes to visit a local "upscale" restaurant for anything from Thai to ribs. If that’s what it takes to look so great at 70, we’ll have what she’s having. Click here for a look at the document displayed by The Smoking Gun.

Chaka Khan

When "I’m Every Woman" is one of your big hits, it makes sense you’ve got a lot of demands. Besides brand-new bedding in the hotel room, her requests include: - 6 large "high-end" candles in sandalwood, pine, or gardenia – a bottle of apple cider vinegar – 2 bouquets of fresh-cut wildflowers – 6 large brown free-range boiled eggs with three fatty acids – Dannon Activia yogurts – a pack of wheat tortillas Also, an electric cart to transport her and her six-person entourage through the airport. Hey, we’d ask for that too if we could! Click here for a look at the document displayed by The Smoking Gun.

Mariah Carey

Carey’s got a rep for being high-maintenance, but judging just from the dressing-room items on this particular rider, her requests are nothing out of the ordinary. Sure, there’s a bottle of chilled Cristal on the list, but mostly she seems concerned about protecting her voice and figure, with the following: - a bag of Ricola throat lozenges – selection of sugarless gum – 2 hot air humidifiers – 2 air purifiers – 3 boxes of tissues – low fat snacks, cheese and bread – skim milk – lemon zinger honey tea And, for the diva who’s just a kid at heart, a box of bendy straws. Celine Dion

We get why the Canadian singer wants her dressing room to be kept at 73 degrees Fahrenheit, but what does she have against ruffled potato chips? Her 2008-9 tour contract specifies: - fresh pineapple, melon, figs, cherries – a bowl of potato chips (ketchup-, salt-and-vinegar, and sweet-sour flavored-no ruffles) – Clorets chewing gum – Gatorade or Powerade – a bar of Dove soap Like Janet Jackson, she asks that recycling be observed and leftovers donated to food kitchens or shelters. Being a Vegas headliner didn’t warp this superstar’s values. Click here for a look at the document displayed by The Smoking Gun.

Paula Abdul

Okay, okay. . . so when was the last time Paula toured? No matter-it’s always fun to check in on this pop diva’s tastes. Though she had a mini-bucket of Coke sitting in front of her on American Idol, Abdul apparently prefers Pepsi products. A few nuggets from her rider: - fresh whole apples, bananas, oranges, plums and strawberries – vegetable tray and dip – Pepsi and Diet Pepsi Her regular performance fuel? Evian. She requests 8 bottles be delivered to the stage prior to showtime. And 24 bath towels, of course. Click here for a look at the document displayed by The Smoking Gun.
