What, Me Marry?

Here’s to the women who don’t need a man to put a ring on it.

Mary-Louise Parker

When Billy Crudup left a very pregnant Parker (and later publicly stepped out with Claire Danes), the world gave a collective gasp. But the Weeds star is nothing if not independent. "At first, I thought, I’m single, it’s too hard," Parker told MORE in 2009 of her decision to add to her family by adopting a second child. "But then I thought, I don’t want to be on my deathbed not having done something because it was too hard. I’m so glad I did."

Cameron Diaz

Could Diaz be the female George Clooney? From Matt Dillon to Justin Timberlake to A-Rod, the actress has had her fair share of sexy companions. "Who would want to be with the same person for 80 years?" Diaz has said. "I think the big misconception in our society is that we’re supposed to meet the one when we’re 18, and we’re supposed to get married to them and love them for the rest of our lives. Bulls**t."

Sheryl Crow

"A family doesn’t always look like girl meets boy, they fall in love, they get married, they have a kid," Crow told Parade in 2008. "I said, ‘OK, I’m going to let go of what I think things are supposed to look like, because I can’t control anything.’ " Since splitting with fiancé Lance Armstrong, the singer has adopted two sons, Wyatt and Levi, on her own.

Dana Delany

"I feel so fulfilled in my life, and I’m so content being by myself that if [marriage] were to happen, that would be great, but it’s not a priority," Delany told MORE about her singleton status. No longer a Desperate Housewife, she stars in the new ABC series Body of Proof this fall.

Diane Keaton

Pacino, Beatty and Allen are just some of the names you’ll find on Keaton’s ex list. Today, this adoptive mother of two feels no pressure to be in a relationship. "It’s a huge part of life that’s missing, yeah, but I don’t miss it," she told MORE last year. "I don’t have to worry that I’m not living up to some responsibility as a partner to somebody else."

Condoleezza Rice

The former Secretary of State told Katie Couric in 2006, "I’ve just never particularly wanted to get married to someone. But who knows? Maybe one of these days."

Edie Falco

The Nurse Jackie star is tired of talking about marriage, especially yours. She told thedailybeast.com, "Because I’m not married I tend to get a lot of eye-rolling conversations with people about their marriages. Why would I want to head there? I want love in my life, no question about that. But I have a ton of it." (Falco is the mother of two adopted children.)

Minnie Driver

In 2009, Driver stood up for single women everywhere when she told The Telegraph, "This is the age that we really show people what we have got. There is no reason for any woman to feel she has been left on the shelf in her forties like they used to." Though she has a two-year-old son, Henry, she has steadfastly refused to name the child’s father, telling People at the time of his birth that "I’m not getting married to this person and I don’t know what’s going to happen but everyone is cool about the situation." (Take that, Bill O’Reilly!)

Oprah Winfrey

The media mogul has made a career of talking to celebrities about their love lives, but when it comes to her own she’s remained tight-lipped. (Winfrey has been with beau Stedman Graham for so many years we’ve lost count.) When asked by Larry King if she’d ever consider marriage, she said, "I don’t know the answer to that question. For the past 15, 16 years the answer has been no."

Bridget Moynahan

A self-professed "traditional girl," Moynahan, who announced she was pregnant not long after breaking up with NFL star Tom Brady, never pictured herself a single mom. "Going through that traumatic time of being heartbroken and then being pregnant turned my whole life upside down and inside out and just knocked the wind out of me," she told Harper’s Bazaar. "But now I have a child, and it’s the best thing in the world." The actress, whose son is now three, costars in the new CBS series Blue Bloods.

Lauren Graham

She plays a divorcée on Parenthood, but in her personal life Graham is happily single. "There’s still this implication that you’re not completely successful if you’re single and in your forties," she told MORE in 2009. "Well, why not?"

Jennifer Coolidge

The original MILF (in American Pie), Coolidge has learned to take a more mature approach to relationships. After a recent breakup, she said, she didn’t rush into anything new: "When you’re younger, you get another person immediately. At least this time I took a break, which was incredibly helpful. I wish I’d done that my whole life."

Sarah Silverman

"I’m not against marriage, but it’s just not for me," the comic told Playboy. "I’m a vegetarian, but I don’t have a problem if you want a hamburger. Marriage to me is like eating meat. I think it’s gross and [bleep]ing crazy."

Patricia Clarkson

Clarkson, now starring in the film Cairo Time, has told MORE, "I don’t consider the fact that I’ve dated several men in my life and not married one a failure. I consider that a good time!" FOR MORE STORIES LIKE THIS, CHECK OUT THE JUICIEST CELEB SPLITS EVER
