You might think nuns would be pretty much the last people in the world to face reprimand, but the Vatican has taken the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, a group representing most American Roman Catholic nuns, to task for “deviating from church doctrine and promoting what the Holy See called ‘radical feminist themes,’ ” the Los Angeles Times reports.

The Vatican said the nuns aren't vocal enough in opposing gay marriage and abortion, according to the newspaper.

“We are so shocked by this action that we're still putting our thoughts together,” Stephanie Niedringhaus, a spokeswoman for the Network lobby within the conference, tells the Times. "We never expected this and we are deeply grieved for the tens of thousands of sisters who dedicate themselves to social justice work."

All we can say is, lord have mercy.
