Working a stressful job with long hours probably isn’t going to do any body any good. Perhaps that’s why a new study finds 55 percent of female nurses are obese.
ABC News reports that the study out of the School of Nursing at the University of Maryland shows nursing schedules are partly to blame.
“Health care professionals are often involved in providing advice or care to patients that relates to things that aren’t totally under control in their own lives,” David Katz, MD, MPH, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center, tells the network. “It’s not uniform for health care professionals to eat well or avoid tobacco.”
Study author Kihye Han says nurses face many challenges when it comes to controlling their weight.
“The solutions are . . . giving the nurses the knowledge and skills they need to manage their weight, and environmental reforms, like having opportunities for physical activity breaks in hospitals, and having nutritious food options readily available 24 hours a day,” Katz tells ABC.
Sounds like a perfect time to figure out how to improve hospital food.
