Don’t have yourself an office husband, cubicle chum or break room BFF? Even if your co-workers make Dwight from The Office seem like a world-class charmer, you might want to figure out a way to be more social when you’re punching that clock—it could mean you'll live longer.
USA Today reports a new study out of Israel finds employees who on average were 41 years old and had worked for 20 years for 8.8 hours a day, and who didn’t have emotional support at the office, faced a 2.4 times greater risk of dying within those 20 years.
“We spend most of our waking hours at work, and we don't have much time to meet our friends during the weekdays,” study co-author Dr. Sharon Toker of Tel Aviv University said in a statement. “Work should be a place where people can get necessary emotional support.”
And make sure you’re sharing water cooler talk with the Pams, Jims and Phyllises of the office—not so much the Michaels. The research, published in Health Psychology, shows better health and longer lives are more closely related to social support from peers than to hanging with the boss or supervisor, USA Today reports.
Bottom line: All work and no play makes Jill a goner. Now, who’s up for leaving the office for drinks tonight?
