Jobs Report: 55-and-Older Group Sees Biggest Employment Gains

Latest stats also show older Americans have lowest unemployment rate

All that work experience may actually count for something.

Today says the latest employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows Americans age 55 and older are seeing job increases of 1.69 million over last year, with about 30.2 million people in that group now in the workforce.

The increase is the biggest for any age group, according to the news show, and the unemployment rate for the 55-plus crowd is lower than that of any other age group, at 5.9 percent.

“Obviously you have a lot of older workers that want to stay in the labor force,” Dean Baker, an economist at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, tells Today.

And having insurance doesn’t hurt either.
