Spending way too much time and money trying to find love through online dating? A new study says you’d have just as much luck making a match the old-fashioned way—at a bar.
Reuters reports the study, to be published in the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest, finds too many choices can lead to bad decisions on the online dating front and that algorithms used by some sites just can’t replace meeting someone in person.
“Eighty years of relationship science has reliably shown you can’t predict whether a relationship succeeds based on information about people who are unaware of each other,” report author Eli Finkel, an associate professor of psychology at Northwestern University, tells the news service. “There’s no better way to figure out whether you’re compatible with somebody than talking to them over a cup of coffee or a pint of beer.”
So we have to put down our laptops and meet people face to face? OK, fine. But may we suggest keeping the cocktails to a minimum? Two words: Beer. Goggles. Uh-huh.
