I LOVE BUYING on sale, and thanks to the sagging economy the last year has been an excellent hunting season. On one recent expedition, I went into a store and spied a pair of gorgeous Christian Louboutin platform pumps. As I stood gazing at their beauty (and their price tag, $695), a saleswoman approached and said, “They’re a classic, and they’ll never go on sale.” Really? Never? I was skeptical, but she got backup from Ken Downing, senior vice president and fashion director of Neiman Marcus, who’s been tracking merchandise for 30 years. He has no doubt that certain items will hold their price—and that they’re actually worth it.
