"I had a hair color disaster right before this shoot. Sitting in a new salon, getting what I thought would be my usual sunny blonde streaks, I ended up with black and orange, like a calico cat. I had to cut four inches to get rid of the worst parts, then beg my old colorist out of retirement for one day to rescue me."

The trendy color this summer? Yellow. Linen coat ($1,715) and chiffon blouse ($943) by Luisa Beccaria. Alexis Bittar necklace ($350).

"One of my best marriages has been with my cosmetics brand. I was the face of CoverGirl for 20 years; we took a break for a decade, then found we couldn’t live without each other. The brand’s Advanced Radiance foundations are for women my age; I really do use the product."

Silk jersey halter dress by Diane Von Furstenberg ($385, Saks Fifth Avenue, 877-551-7257). Oscar de la Renta suede slingbacks ($595, 888-888-4757, Neiman Marcus). Ben-Amun raffia bangle ($75).

"If I could have one thing, I’d have Scarlett Johansson’s skin for a day. This generation of girls grew up protecting their skin from day one. No matter how hard you work, once you’re sun-damaged it’s never the same."

The new essential throw-on? A lightweight coat. Burberry Prorsum neoprene scuba trench ($2,995). Ralph Lauren Black Label Cotton Tank ($88).

"I live in the country, so I dress casually — it’s a soccer mom life with my two younger children, Sailor Lee, who’s 9, and Jack Paris, who’s 12. I hate the word practical, but that’s what my real-life wardrobe is."

Chanel lambskin coat ($8,620) and belt ($2,320, both at Chanel stores, 800-550-0005). Cynthia Steffe silk twill skirt ($250, by special order, 212-403-6200). Gucci booties ($840, 800-456-7663).

"Aside from my role at CoverGirl, I’m into a lot of things. My eyewear line is in its 14th year, my Total Gym fitness equipment is a success, and I’m starting to experiment with new design ideas. Home design has always appealed to me. I’m always shoving my furniture around and dragging things home."

Global activist Brinkley goes green in a Norma Kamali stretch cotton trench ($375, 800-852-6254) worn over an Ellen Tracy brushed cotton skirt ($248, 800-925-7979 for stores). Jimmy Choo sandals ($795, 866-524-6687).

"I never really have to think about dieting. As a lifelong vegetarian, I feel that the more you know, the less inclined you are to make bad choices. I have a good idea for a food show I’d like to explore. Stay tuned."

O Oscar stretch cotton dress ($149, Macy’s).
