Somehow bras rarely appear on the list of necessities when even basic staples such as food and toiletries are hard to come by. They’re one of the least-donated items to women in need, who don’t have the option of spending on undergarments when food and safety are at stake.
Soma Intimates is battling this overlooked need with a bra-donation campaign called “Giving Is Beautiful.” The initiative began on January 12 and will last through February 26, during which time both new and gently used bras will be accepted at all Soma Intimates stores. The company is partnering with the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV)—an advocacy organization that represents more than 2,000 shelter programs across the U.S.—to donate bras to victims of domestic and sexual violence. The previous two donations since the initiative’s inception in July 2010 have resulted in the contribution of 145,000 bras. This year Soma Intimates aims to boost the number to 250,000.
Bras can be donated to any of the 185 Soma Intimates boutiques or mailed to: Soma Bra Donation, National Network to End Domestic Violence, 2001 S Street NW, Suite 400, Washington, DC 20009. No woman should have to choose between buying a bra and eating dinner.
