Your B Cup Runneth Over? Breasts Are Getting Bigger

And that’s not a good thing, author says in new book

by Lesley Kennedy • Reporter

Breasts are booming—well, they’re growing, anyway—and obesity is partly to blame.

Florence Williams writes in her new book, Breasts: A Natural and Unnatural History, that American breasts are the biggest they’ve ever been, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The average bra size is now 36C, up from 34B a generation ago, according to Williams.

Despite what many men may think, that’s not a good thing, as obesity can lead to all sorts of health issues, including postmenopausal breast cancer, Williams tells the newspaper. And breasts are getting a heavy dose of pollutants, the Sun-Times reports.

“Breast-feeding, it turns out, is a very efficient way to transfer our society’s industrial flotsam to the next generation,” Williams writes in her book, according to the newspaper. “Our breasts soak up pollution ... Breasts carry the burden of the mistakes we have made.”

We can feel it in our lower back.
