This month marks the 50th anniversary of Betty Friedan’s feminist call to arms, The Feminine Mystique (just reissued with an introduction by New York Times columnist Gail Collins and an afterword by author and journalist Anna Quindlen). A few things have changed since the late founder of NOW took up her provocative pen:
- The median age of first marriage for women has gone from 20.5 to 26.9
- The percentage of college students who are women has gone from 38% to 57%
- The percentage of working mothers with children under 18 has gone from 30.5% to 70.6%.
