1. Clean Up Your Act

While makeup brushes aren’t the sexiest purchase, Sonia Kashuk’s Fall Brush Up 10-piece set ($27; target.com) is eye catching enough to be exciting. 2. For Grown-ups Eau-nly

Terry de Gunzburg, the French cosmetics genius behind By Terry Cosmetics (and the brains behind the best-selling concealer YSL Touche Éclat), has created five complex fragrances ($195; barneys.comthat are all so lovely, it’s too difficult for us to choose a favorite. Our preferred layering combo, though, is Rêve Opulent (a heavy-on-the-gardenia floral) topped by Parti Pris (a sexy tuberose).

3. Nude and Improved

A nude lip can be appealing—but take neutrality too far, and you might end up looking a little dead. No danger of that with YSL’s new rebel nudes ($34; yslbeautyus.com). Using its blockbuster Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain formula, which looks like an opaque gloss but lasts like long-wear lipstick, the company has created 10 elegant new neutrals. Our favorite hue and the most universally flattering: no. 101 nude provocateur.

Designer Marc Jacobs has focused his creative talents on cosmetics this fall, with the splashy launch of his Marc Jacobs Beauty brand at Sephora nationwide. One of his—and our—favorite items in the line is the Remedy Concealer Pen ($39; sephora.com), a camouflaging cream that promises to cover and correct, thanks to a cocktail of anti-aging ingredients. Bonus: The pen’s palladium tip soothes and cools the under-eye during application. Avail-able in seven shades.

6. Sheer Leader

Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder from Chanel ($60; chanel.comserves many purposes. It comes in seven shades; find one akin to your skin tone, and it will set your foundation—or act as barely-there coverage (like a powder version of tinted moisturizer). Choose a slightly deeper hue, and it functions as contour powder, eyeshadow or even a bronzer. Finally, go lighter and use the powder to highlight cheekbones, browbones or the Cupid’s bow of your top lip. Shown: No. 30, which works as a bronzer for fair tones, as sheer coverage for medium tones and as a highlighter for darker skin.
