Shannon Eastin has scored a touchdown for women everywhere, earning a spot in football history as the first female to officiate an NFL game.
ESPN reports Eastin, 42, was the line judge as part of a crew of replacement officials (the NFL Referees Association is in a lockout) during last night’s preseason San Diego Chargers–Green Bay Packers matchup.
Before kickoff, cameras were focused on the referee, who the network says has 16 years of NCAA Division I experience, and a couple of players stopped to shake her hand.
“I want to encourage women: Don’t be afraid,” Eastin told the Associated Press during a conference call before the game. “Pursue and have dreams. This is my dream. With very step I hope to show it really doesn’t matter if you are male or female.”
