Unwed Moms Younger Than 30 a Growing Trend

Analysis shows more than half of mothers in their teens or 20s are single

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby with the baby carriage . . . Kids are gonna have to find themselves a new schoolyard song to sing.

The New York Times reports a recent analysis of government data shows more than 50 percent of births to women younger than 30 in the United States are to unwed mothers.

In 2009, 59 percent of overall births were to married women, the newspaper adds, with college graduates “overwhelmingly” choosing to wed before they have kids.

“Marriage has become a luxury good,” Frank Furstenberg, a University of Pennsylvania sociologist, tells the Times.
