Well, sure, you have to eat right (boo!) and hit the exercise hard (hiss!) when you’re trying to lose weight. But here’s dieting news we can cheer about: Sleep is key to dropping those pounds, too (hooray!).
The Los Angeles Times reports that the latest issue of CMAJ, published by the Canadian Medical Association, says when your brain is tired, you eat more and your metabolism gets all wonky (our term, not theirs).
“Chronic sleep restriction is pervasive in modern societies, and there is robust evidence supporting the role of reduced sleep as contributing to the current obesity epidemic,” the authors write, according to the newspaper. “… Sleep should be included as part of the lifestyle package that traditionally has focused on diet and physical activity.”
So, nap time, it is!
