It’s hard to believe a 105-pound woman could polish off 40 hot dogs in 10 minutes, but “The Black Widow” stuffed herself with nearly half her body weight to take home the pink belt and a $10,000 prize.
Sonya Thomas, 42, won the first women’s division of the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, New York, Reuters reports. Runner-up Juliet Lee gulped down a measly 29 dogs.
“She eats with a cloven tongue—it is the mark of Cain,” contest emcee George Shea tells the news service of Thomas’s competitive-eating edge. “Her stomach is a cauldron. Her mouth is like a vise.”
Meanwhile, Joey Chestnut continued his reign as the contest’s champ, noshing an impressive 62 hot dogs in the men’s competition.
Each year, we can’t decide whether to cheer or groan. Oh well, just pass the mustard. And the antacid.
