I’ve got a great way to expand your wardrobe without taking a toll on your wallet. I call it Shop Your Own Closet. Start by taking a good, hard look at your wardrobe, and pull out a few lightweight spring/summer pieces that can be layered in among your dark wooly things for the cooler months. Stay away from cotton (never looks good in winter, no matter what) and look to your silks, satins and jersey knits. Think prints, stripes and bright colors.

How to wear the look? Layer spring/summer pieces over warm, wintry ones: A silk floral dress over brown tights and a super thin brown turtleneck; a chunky cable knit cardigan over a pink jersey wrap dress, a merino turtleneck with a full, satin skirt, tights, and tall boots. Something to try: Wide waist-cinching belts (left, $58; work wonders when it comes to creating shape and controlling volume. My advice? Use what you’ve got, layer it up, and by all means, experiment.
