Your Best Hair Length After 40

Your sexiest hair length may be a lot longer -- or shorter -- than you thought. Learn how to get great hair over 40.

Over 40 Hair: The Long and the Short

The conventional wisdom for hair after 40 is that a well-mannered middle length works for everyone. We beg to differ. Your sexiest hair length may be a lot longer -- or shorter -- than you thought.

No matter how great you look, if you're over 40, your hair isn't what it used to be. Hormonal changes (especially at menopause), years of chemical processing and heat styling, even dieting and smoking, can contribute to skimpier volume, a receding hairline, broken wisps around the face, and a widening part. The gradual decline of estrogen slows hair growth; it also reduces production of collagen, so hair becomes drier and more brittle and loses shine. Gray hair -- whether you color it or not -- has a coarser texture.

You can fake healthier-looking hair in the short term -- and boost hair health in the long term -- with the right products and care. What you need now, no matter what your hair's length: low-sudsing, detergent-free shampoos that are loaded with humectants; rich, nourishing conditioners; protein-based masques; concentrated silicone or botanical serums to reduce frizz and add shine; non-drying mousses and styling sprays; creams to create a body-building base for blow-drying; light, leave-in conditioners for smoothness, silkiness, and manageability.

At sixty-four my hair is longer than ever before, about four inches below shoulders, long layered cut. I love it! So easy and fun, with no fuss or bother since styles are just waiting to happen and rules are for everyone but me. Mostly gray long hair means salon coloring is expensive but a dream where a sixteen-year-old granddaughter can practice coloring skills. Formerly a dark brunette, light brown is youthful and lengthens time between colorings with less contrast between roots and treated hair. My favorite style is a thorough brushing, work in a conditioner suitable for dry hair, loosely wind the length, twist, and secure to the top of head. I poof and leave a bit loose to frame my face. Tight on top-dry in the pool, quick dressy-let down, volumizer, finger fluff and a bit of shine enhancer hair spray. I do have fun buying hair products and doodads.

JAMIE LEE CURTIS is the best example of short hair on older women, I remember back when she turned 50 and cut her hair short, shes probably in her 70s now, but in her hay days she was sexy, with long hair.

Most females get the 50s hair doo when they get in their 50s. Look at all the women you know, when they turn 50 the hair gets shorter.Like Meg Ryan short hair when she turned fifty- and she had such a pretty face years ago.Jamie lee Curtis back years ago turned 50 and cut her hair short. The 50s hair doo is a sign of older age.
