What’s Worse Than Swimsuit Shopping? Thinking About It

Researchers find just imagining trying on bathing suits puts women in a foul mood

by Lesley Kennedy • MORE.com Reporter

Here’s a study finding we really didn’t need serious researchers to tell us: Trying on swimsuits—actually, even just the thought of trying on swimsuits—is no day at the beach.

Nevertheless, LiveScience reports that a team from Flinders University in Australia, out to study “self-objectification” in women when it comes to certain clothing, had women picture themselves in four style scenes: trying on a swimsuit in a dressing room, wearing a swimsuit while they walked down a beach, trying on jeans and a sweater and walking around in jeans and a sweater.

Guess what put women in an instant bad mood? Blame the fluorescent lighting, fat mirrors and sheer horror of bathing-suit shopping, but trying on suits made women feel the worst about their bodies.

Our advice? Shop online. And totally get a spray tan. Because jeans and a sweater may make you feel less insecure, but they’d be ridiculous to wear on your next trip to the beach, now, wouldn’t they?
