We’re influenced by all sorts of people—from entertainers to politicians to business leaders to fashion designers. But who influences us the most? Time magazine has released its annual list of the world’s 100 most influential people, and this year, 38 women appear on it—a record.
In the world of pop culture, actresses Claire Danes, Tilda Swinton, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig and Viola Davis made the list, as did MORE cover girl Chelsea Handler, singers Adele and Rihanna and writers Ann Patchett and E.L. James (we should have known 50 Shades of Grey would find its way in there somehow).
Politicians including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller were recognized, along with execs such as Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, IBM CEO Virginia Rometty and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg.
Fashion designer Sarah Burton, who designed the wedding gown of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (also on the list, along with her sister, Pippa Middleton) was deemed influential, and so was Spanx chief Sara Blakely.
We’re happy to see 38 women recognized—here’s to the tally rising to 50 percent in 2013!
