Now, we love Dolly Parton. Love her. Seriously, a trip to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, ranks high on our bucket list. And whatever your views on kiddie beauty pageants may be, hearing a pint-size singer attempt to belt out “I Will Always Love You” is pretty much a surefire way to elicit a few oohs and aahs.
But the idea of dressing up a four-year-old in fake boobs and a padded butt—not to mention a giant blonde wig and hot-pink catsuit—well, to paraphrase Doralee Rhodes from 9 to 5, parents, don’t let your children look like dime-store floozies.
Today reports the young Maddy Jackson wore the Parton getup on a recent episode of TLC’s Toddlers & Tiaras. Appearing on the morning show earlier this week, mom Lindsay Jackson defended the pageant attire.
“To some people, it’s over the top, to us it’s just what happens,” she tells Today. “It’s just normal.”
Really? Normal? Even Dolly, who says she modeled her looks on the town tramp, doesn’t call what she does normal. “I look just like the girls next door,” she has quipped, “. . . if you happen to live next door to an amusement park.”
Well, we guess that fits. Toddlers & Tiaras is definitely a sideshow, after all.
