More about Patricia Volonakis Davis
My first non-fiction book, Harlot's Sauce: A Memoir of Food, Family, Love, Loss, and Greece, was published in November 2008, and much to my joy, is being well-received by my audience, available in bookshops and libraries, and has ranked in the top five in its category on amazon.com.
I am the founder and editor-in-chief of the non-partisan Harlots' Sauce Radio e-magazine and podcast. I've had the pleasure of interviewing some of the most dynamic, inspiring people on the planet. You can find my writings in a number of places, and they are very often on relationships, but also on political and social issues. Some find my satirical bent on the latter two enjoyable, and others find it irritating.
I've also authored a number of poems on women's issues, including, “If This Woman is Being Operated Recklessly,” which appeared alongside Laurence Ferlinghetti's work in New Press magazine.
In 1995,I emigrated to Athens, Greece, where I founded an education service, Serafim Books, named for “a good book is like a guardian angel.” Serafim Books gained international acclaim for its dedication to education and its philanthropic work with organizations such as Make-A-Wish Greece. During this time, Scholastic Inc., publishers of children’s books and educational materials, appointed me their exclusive representative of Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. (And let me tell you- this time period in my life was one hell of a ride)
A native New Yorker, these days I live in Northern California, where I started my "reinvention" - as More likes to call it - more than eight years ago. I remarried at the age of 46, after a twenty-year marriage that really took the stuffing out of me. But when it was over, the stuffing had been replaced with quite a bit of steel. The difference between this marriage and my previous one, is like the difference between an afternoon in a prison workout yard, and an exhilarating bicycle ride on the coast. I write a lot about my new life, and the gut-wrenching changes I had to make in my circumstances and within myself in order to achieve it, and my fondest hope is that others will learn from my experiences, and make better, braver choices as a result. Though I never preach, only show by my own example and laughing at myself, what people-pleasers we women can sometimes be, and what that does to our spirits.
