I am a city woman who now lives in the country and loves it. The country is not silent. It is noisy from dawn to night. There is a river right outside our door and you can hear it rush by. Across the river is a train track and freight trains pass by, mostly in the middle of the night. The birds start singing before dawn. My husband chops wood and the vibration can be felt all through the house. The dog barks. The cicadas sing in August from 10PM to 2AM.
I am lulled to sleep by the sounds and awaken to the glorious songs of the birds.
I get back to the city each week. There are some things I can never give up: my hairdresser, my dentist, the specialty food stores, independent movies, my friends, Fairway on 128th Street; and I see my Mom who is in an Alzheimer's residence on the upper west side.
