How to Look Fab on Weekends

Stop walking around in gym clothes (yes, you). Time for a fresh Sunday style: comfortable clothes that also look chic.

Let's Start With the Shoes

We understand you’re craving something cushy after five days of heels, but running sneakers should not be your standard weekend footwear. Welcome to a cooler choice. The subtle sheen of matte-gold sequins is a neutral, wearable hue that’ll amp up jeans, khakis and cords. Another possibility: this season’s “it” flat, the new espadrille. What else will elevate your weekends? Bold color, slimming knits, the perfect all-weather topper, even a sporty dress that’s as easy to wear as a T-shirt (promise). OK, time for tough love: Raise your right hand and swear to break up with your yoga pants for good.

Foot friendly, sleek and age appropriate: Converse sequin and canvas sneakers, $95; visit their New York store or call to order by phone (212) 966-1099

Best Weekend Uniforms to Steal: Tory Burch

“I’m usually running around with my boys, and layering is key for me. My go-to outfit is jeans, a knit jacket and flats. I love thin turtlenecks under everything, and a printed scarf is the perfect accessory.”

Charles Thompson

Best Weekend Uniforms to Steal: Paula Abdul

“This season I love colored denim, which I like to wear with a silk T-shirt or a really cool graphic tee, and a leather jacket on top. I think I was born in heels, but for the weekend I do a midheel boot.”

Best Weekend Uniforms to Steal: Liz Lange

“If the weather allows, I opt for a short denim or corduroy skirt without tights, and flats. I always feel more fashionable in a skirt or dress, and I add a great costume necklace to give the look punch.”

The "It" Bag

As Comfy as Jeans...

...But more stylish—and feminine—without being frou frou. Try it, you'll like it:

1. Carry a bag that’s not black
This bucket style (unstructured) is less work-y, and navy is baby steps for the color phobic among us.

2. Polish your look with a trench

Wear. It. With. Everything. The midlength and soft fabric make it weekend casual.

French Connection cotton blend trench coat, $198; Hemline, 504-592-0242. Lauren by Ralph lauren silk-cotton cardigan, $139; Bloomingdale’s, 800-555-7467.

3. Trade jeans for a dress
In cotton knit (and classic stripes), it’s as effortless as pants but more feminine. You could even throw this over gym clothes and appear “done.”

C&C California polyester blend dress,$88;

4. Amp up the cool with moto boots
They’re rugged and comfortable but with attitude. Add black hose or leggings for coverage.

The New Weekend Jacket

Nothing pulls a look together like a great top layer, and this gold anorak’s a winner: The color is chic, the waist can be cinched (or not), and it blocks wind and repels rain. It’s also roomy but thin enough to stash in a bag. Worth the splurge.

Clogs are Black!

But do as SJP does: For best results, wear them with jeans (rolled). Skirts, not so much. Socks are optional.

Celebs Who Get the Weekends Just Right

► Halle Berry She likes a monochromatic scheme, with long layers (to the knee) over straight legs. Motorcycle boots (jeans tucked in) are her wear-with-all.

► Jennifer Aniston She makes skirts and dresses more casual by wearing them with flat boots. She opts for gray, brown and taupe instead of weekday black. A scarf is a must.

► Gwen Stefani She loves a black-and-white palette (brightened by her trademark red lips) and pairs cropped knit tops with cargoes or skinny jeans.

Our New Where-to-Buy Favorite!

We are officially obsessed with L.L. Bean Signature, an off-shoot of the popular retailer. In this chic, fleece-free zone, you’ll find fresh versions of basics (printed button-downs and bright sweaters), along with stylish standouts such as the long shorts and cropped seersucker jacket at left. With prices ranging from $20 to $350, the line makes it affordable to upgrade. We asked Signature creative director Alex Carleton how to build a weekend wardrobe.

Layer up: For best results, mix fit and flare. Wear a fuller cut on top with skinny jeans on the bottom; wear a fitted top with a full skirt.

Think outside the jeans box: Take the style that flatters your body and find those pants in other fabrics. If you like bell bottoms, try that shape in corduroy or twill.

Mix prints: The key to playful pattern mixing (plaid with floral) is to make sure you stay in one color family (for example, by sticking to blues). Keep your pattern play grounded by wearing one strong solid.

Invest in accessories: Jewelry and scarves are not just for the work week. This is a great way to add color and texture without making a big investment.

CL by Laundry also has a great selection of easy, comfortable and stylish flats for all occasions.

Note to the Stylebook editors (and interested buyers): The Franco Sarto boots shown in the "Look Fab on Weekends" feature, while very cute, are not leather but all man-made materials. I did my research, found them at Macy's, and will try them all the same. But thought you should know...
