That was 25 years ago. One April morning, months after I’d first seen the dancer with the curly black hair, I was to give a reading in New York City and was offered a ride by two friends of mine. They brought along one of their friends—that very same dancer—and now we’ve been married for 22 years. She’s the mother of our three children, the artistic director of two modern-dance companies and the owner of a dance studio. And she’s the woman who smiles at me only when she feels like it.
