Knowing how to create a classic low chignon—or bun—is a must for every girl. With the holidays coming up, learn how to create this simple yet elegant style perfect for any holiday party or festive fall outing.
Wearing a classic low chignon—a word derived from the French term “chignon du cou,” meaning nape of the neck—is a simple way to look polished and to showcase your earrings, set off a statement necklace, or to highlight your wardrobe. This simple tutorial will show you how to create a low chignon in three easy steps. A classic low bun is perfect for just about any hair length and easy to re-create with some curl or bend in the hair, or even with second-day hair. If your hair is straight, use a medium-size barrel curling iron to add movement and texture. This quick prep step will give hair hold and allow it to mold easier when creating your bun shape. This style works really well with full bangs, a side bang, or hair completely pulled back.
1. Create a low ponytail, and then twist two strands into a loose rope braid. This step will help prevent layers from unraveling while you create your bun and keep your style from unfolding once it’s done.
2. Wrap your hair around your finger to start creating your bun.
3. Hug your bun in place, and start pinning around the entire bun to maintain its shape. If you have heavy hair, I recommend crisscrossing bobby pins to prevent your bun from falling and having pins pop out. Hold in place with a firm-holding hairspray.
