Color-Changing Hair Dye Is A Mood Ring For Your Head

Forget rainbow hair, color-changing hair is exactly what you need this spring.

You might have seen color-changing hair before, but you've never it seen it like this. Thanks to data visualization scientist practicing and witch Lauren Bowker, we now have a hair dye that changes color based off the temperature of its surroundings, just like a mood ring.

Bowker told Dazed in an interview that the discovery of the appropriately named, "FIRE," color-changing hair dye invention came from "messing about in the lab," and explained (in simpler terms) how exactly it worked.

"When heat hits the pigment, or if the cool hits the pigment, it changes the bonds of the chemistry to give you a different color, so it's like a chemical reaction," Bowker described.

"However, we also work with ones that change their structure, which gives you a light refraction instead, so it's more like a prism color change. …If you have red hair and you're in the wind it might go blue. So what we did was look at data patterns of weathers and the environment in different countries and tailor the color changes to correlate with those."

Ugh. How great is color-changing hair dye for those of us who want to adjust our hair color almost weekly, but we're terrified to damage our poor locks? And let's be real. This look would be a killer conversation starter for any awkward situation you might find yourself in.

Stay tuned for London Fashion Week where Bowker will launch the the project as a collaboration between her brand THEUNSEEN and Storm Models. Until then, check out this video to watch the magic unveil!
