Fashion Week: 9 Real Life Ways to Wear Runway Hair

Look like a runway model with these hairstyles from New York Fashion Week.

There's no shortage of style inspiration during fashion week, particularly with all the high fashion hairstyles. But can those looks be translated from the catwalk to the metaphorical sidewalk? We say yes. All you need is a simple artillery of supermarket styling tools. Here are nine of our favorite looks for fall 2014.

Jason Wu
I love a messy bun! Legendary stylist Odile Gilbert created a sleek and sexy look that anyone can wear.
How-to: Start by sectioning off the top. Smooth the sides back with some gel into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Twist the hair out of the pony to create a messy bun and pin into place. Release your top section and pull it back on top of your low messy bun. Secure with bobby pins.

Tome
This voluminous, off-the-face hairstyle is exactly what the modern woman needs to boost her chic appeal.
How-to: Apply a mousse and/or root lifter in the hair. Blow dry it the opposite way for extra lift. Once the hair is 80 percent dry, use a large, round brush and finish drying. Start with sections from the back and work up to the head. Once you get above the ears, make sure to blow dry the hair all the way back and away from your face. To set the look, wear a cotton headband for about 5 to 10 minutes and add a bit of hairspray.

Alice Olivia
Feeling a little saucy? Try these sexy curls for a new you.
How-to: Blow dry a spray gel and mousse in your hair for volume and hold. Part the hair in the middle and use a 1-inch curling iron to curl the hair toward the face. Tip: When you get to the section above the eye level, curl the hair from mid-shaft down. This will allow low volume at the root. Finish it off with a firm hold hairspray.

Emerson
Punk meets boho with a disheveled braid and funky purple color.
How-to: Section the hair in front and separate for braiding later. Working the back section, create a messy French braid. Release the side sections, apply a purple hair chalk and braid the side sections. Pull back each side braid and tuck into your French braid in the back. Bobby pin in place.

Creatures of the Wind
A dramatic braided fringe sweeps over the face into a dramatic asymmetrical braid. This fun style is for anyone who dares to be a little different.
How-to: Create a side part and brush hair forward. French braid from your side part, working to the ears. Continue your braid to the back of the head working the French braid from one ear to the opposite side of the neck. Finish your braid and secure with an elastic. Apply a medium hold hairspray and gently tug at each section to add fullness.

Zimmerman
This style works for all you ladies who like to shower and go.
How-to: Apply a medium hold gel on lightly damp hair. Work quickly so the gel doesn't dry out. Pull the hair back to the nape of your neck. Split hair in half, taking each section and twisting the hair toward the middle. Secure the ends with an elastic.

Shoji
These models looked like angels as their undone hair softly moved. This style would be perfect for "second day hair" because it's all about the texture.
How-to: Blow dry a salt spray in the hair for texture and grit. Gently back comb the hair, pulling it to the nape of the neck. Divide the hair in three sections and twist each section, creating a messy horizontal bun. Repeat this to each section. For a whimsical feel to the hair, take the palms of your hands and gently rub the hair all over to create wisps.

Siranos
These low, sleek styles deliver polished perfection.
How-to: Brush all the hair to the nape of the neck and make a ponytail. Take a sock bun and cut it in half. Take the ends of the hair from pony, loop around the bun, and roll the sock bun up with the hair until you get to the base of your pony. Pinch the bun together creating a U shape. Secure with bobby pins. Finish it off with a medium hold hair spray.

Trina Turk
This style looks a bit like you just stepped out of the gym—in the best possible way.
How-to: Blow dry this look with salt spray for volume, texture, and grit. Gently wrap the hair around a large barrel iron for a slight wave. Gently back comb the hair at the root for volume. Pull back all of the hair, gently divide in half, and twist behind the ear. Pin into place with bobby pins. Repeat on the other side for a barely-there pony.
