Holiday Hairstyle: Hayden Panetteiere Tousled Low Ponytail

As the go-to gym hairstyle, ponytails can get a bad rap, but I'm here to tell you that ponys can be sexy as hell. Hayden Panettiere rocked this tousled low ponytail at the Golden Globes back in 2007, and while Hayden may not have predicted that this hair trend would hit an all-time high in 2013, it sure as heck has. This tousled look is back and bigger then ever; a must-try hairstyle that is super easy, sexy and already has the A-list’s seal of approval. This trend is feminine, easy to do at home and the best way to look undone without looking lazy.

While tousled hair is boho chic, putting it up in a polished ponytail is the perfect way to stay trendy this holiday season.

Craving Hayden's stylish pony? I am too! Let me break it down for you so you can get this chic look in the convenience of your own home

It's all about texture girlfriends! Notice how she has volume and a bit of wave in her hair. That's key to this style and to most ponytails. Check out this high volume ponytail I created.

Step-by-step directions:

  1. To achieve the texture needed for this look, work a volumizing mousse into your hair and blow dry. I recommend products by Label M or Kerastase. Curl the hair with a 1-inch curling iron in order to achieve tousled waves. After the hair is fully curled, give your locks a spritz of light-hold hairspray.
  2. Now softly tease your hair at the roots for lift and volume. You want to tease your hair from your ears up.
  3. Using your fingers, gently pull the hair away from the face toward the nape. Then pull your hair into a low pony, but leave out about an inch section at the bottom of your neck. Secure your ponytail with an elastic, then take that inch section of hair below your pony and wrap it around the elastic. Secure with a bobby pin for a more polished look.
  4. If your hair is curl resistant, you may want to touch up with a curling iron. Finish this look off by applying a firm-hold hairspray. I recommend one by Label M.
