Make your top knot unique by adding a braid. Alberto VO5 hair expert Chris Lospalluto shows you how to update the trendy style in a few simple steps.
Braided Top Knot Step 1
Start with your naturally textured hair that hasn’t been washed for a day. If you have thin hair, use a salt spray or texturizing spray to add volume. Lospalluto recommends Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($42, oribe.com).
Braided Top Knot Step 2
Throw your head upside down and gather your hair on the crown. If you have super thick hair, use a hook elastic to form a stronger base. Otherwise use a regular elastic to make a tight ponytail.
Braided Top Knot Step 3
Take the hair in the ponytail and separate it into three equal-size sections.
Braided Top Knot Step 4
Tightly braid your hair all the way to the end of the ponytail and secure it with a thin elastic band.
Braided Top Knot Step 5
Wrap the braid tightly around itself. Secure it with four medium-size hair pins at north, south, east, and west points on the bun. Add extra if needed.
Braided Top Knot Step 6
Put the end of a teasing comb under the hair around the bun and gently pull up to add volume. Leave the end of the braid out for an interesting touch.
Braided Top Knot Step 7
Once secure, pull the bun apart a little to make it look less formal and more natural.
Braided Top Knot Step 8
Finish with a light-hold hairspray. Now you have a great look for a day at the office, a fun party, or even date night!
