Looking Back At Our Favorite Hair Color Trends Of The Last Year
Between platinum blonde, rose gold, and silver-toned metallics, we can’t pick just one hair color trend we coveted constantly throughout the year. Here’s a quick recap of all our editors’ favorites from 2017.
Ice Blonde Hair
Ice, ice, baby. Between Taylor Swift’s shaggy bob, Zoe Kravitz’s frosty braids, and Kim Kardashian West’s chilly dye job, everyone was rocking icy blonde locks. This high-impact shade gave celebs of all skin tones a dramatic makeover, whether for the runway or red carpet. Even with naturally dark hair, Kim K. took on the cool-toned trend for the Yeezy Season 6 streetwear release, and we are so “hair” for it.
Tiger Eye Balayage Hair
Tiger eye balayage is the hair trend brunettes have been waiting for, giving effortless dimension only J.Lo is known for. But these hand-painted highlights come pretty darn close with an artful balance of rich browns and golds taken from the precious stone it’s named after. Straight or curly, these warm accents subtly blend into a natural brown base, making it ideal for almost any brunette looking to add a little oomph. Negin Mirsalehi of the luxe hair care brand Gisou knows a thing or two about good hair, and if she’s on board, we are too. Even better: It’s lazy girl-friendly so you can skip the salon every other month.
Rose Gold Hair
Kylie Jenner has donned every hair color under the sun (thanks to luxurious wigs and a fab glam squad) but her rose gold phase—kicking off in 2016 and revisited in 2017—was a personal favorite of More’s editors. It was perfectly in tune with the rosé obsession with a bit of heavy metal action. From sunset blonde strands to a full rosy flush, we saw the complete spectrum of this golden pink shade on some of the hottest blondes, including Blake Lively, Lady Gaga, Kate Hudson, and Sienna Miller. With a subtle rose gold glow and well-blended highlights, this bold hair color trend was both sophisticated and work-appropriate, taking rosé all day to a whole new level.
This in-between shade is essentially a modern take on the classic redhead with a delicate mix of copper red and bronze brown making “ronze.” Beloved by Ashley Tisdale, as well as other brunette and redhead celebs, it brings a radiant glow—especially for the winter and fall months. But that didn’t stop other stars (ahem, Emma Roberts and Rihanna) from wearing the hair color all year long. For brunettes, “ronze” is an edgy departure from straightforward brown with warming highlights that instantly brighten up a complexion, whereas tawny accents give depth to natural redheads. Move over blondes, it’s time brunettes (and redheads) have more fun.
Ashy charcoal hair had a serious moment in 2017 as a clap back to the unicorn craze seen throughout the year. It’s not quite black and not quite silver, but somewhere in the middle, like fashion and beauty Youtuber Suzi Tse’s charcoal tresses. This dye job is definitely not for the faint-hearted, requiring plenty of bleach and toner to achieve an all-out ashy look. Cool girls everywhere were leaving salons sporting this sooty look, letting everyone know that they’re not afraid of a little gray hair.
Metallic Silver Hair
From sleek silver ponytails to gunmetal grays, it was metallic hair mania in 2017. In addition to rose gold, “ronze,” and platinum blonde, silver hair made its way into the spotlight as well. Whether a hyper-reflective gloss or an all-over silver coat, we saw this shimmery shade on all lengths, colors, and cuts, on street style stars and runway models, with Mood wig company founder Nyané Lebajoa’s sophisticated shade coming out on top of our favorites list. And we don’t expect this metallic sheen to go away anytime soon either.
There’s no denying denim made a comeback in 2017, but we’re talking about a lot more than distressed Levi’s and vintage jean jackets. Denim-colored tresses stepped onto the scene in various shades: indigo, ocean blue, stonewash, acid wash—something for every skin tone. Street style star and streetwear boutique owner Shady B.’s blue balayage is undeniably cool with hints of gray and dark blue. Just like your favorite pair of skinnies, this blue hue gets better with time, fading to the perfect shade of well-worn denim with each wash.
Bronde was the most achievable hair color of 2017 for blondes and brunettes alike, with models, celebs, and influencers like Gigi Hadid, Lily Rose Depp, and Olivia Palermo embracing the trend in full force. Dutch model Lauren Lewis shows how this brown and blonde-toned combination can work with even the curliest hair, making it a truly universal hair color year-round. Highlight in summer and lowlight in winter. How much easier can it get?
2017 was not lacking in color, that’s for sure. Finishing off our fave hair color trends is blorange, a mashup of blonde and orange that closely resembles a tropical drink. Not to be confused with rose gold, blorange has a more peachy tone. Model Georgia May Jagger dove headfirst into blorange, showing off her rocker-chic roots with a fiery tint. We also saw a more subtle take on the trend with a softer ombré effect that’s just to dye for.
