Nicki Minaj’s Hair Evolution From Crazy and Colorful to Classy

Nicki Minaj is no stranger to change. This Queen of Color changes her hairstyle, her crazy getups, and the color of her technicolor tresses as quickly as she changes personalities. Whether you’re seeing Roman, Martha, Barbie or Nicki, you’re sure to see a bold look. Check out a few of our, ahem, favorite Nicki looks over the years.

It’s safe to say that Nicki has more crazy wigs than the contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race. When paired with the singer’s infamous pink lipstick, a signature looks is created. “[I love] when I go from zero to 10 and everybody sees 10,” Nicki told People StyleWatch. “I don’t love sitting there and getting makeup done. But afterwards it’s like, ‘Yay, we created a new doll today.'”

Nicki may love her crazy colors, but I have nothing good to say about her dip-dyed green locks at the American Music Awards in November 2010.

Nominated for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group and for Best New Artist at the February 2011 Grammy Awards, Nicki definitely made a statement with this over-the-top look. We certainly won’t forget her beehive ‘do and cheetah-print getup any time soon.

Nicki’s never afraid of changing hair color as evidenced by this cotton-candy pink hairstyle she flaunted at the May 2011 Billboard Music Awards.

Platinum haircolor and a pageboy haircut were the next step in this rapper’s crazy hair evolution. Personally, I think long diva locks are more suitable for the woman who once rapped “We don’t even rock them shoes if it ain’t got a comma on the price tag. I mean, but then again, who looks at the price tag?”

Nicki Minaj’s pageboy hairstyle went from the lightest of light to the darkest of dark at the MTV Movie Awards in June 2011. Though I still like long locks better, this one is actually kind of cute.

How could one forget the knotted updo, ice cream necklace, and patterned face mask Nicki wore to the August 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. But these crazy getups aren’t just for Nicki’s fans. “I love change when it comes to my look … I need a new fix,” Nicki told People StyleWatch. “It’s like a high to me—every time I change my hair it’s a high.” Apparently a simple haircut doesn’t suffice for the Female Weezy.

Nicki debuted yet another bold hairstyle at the iHeartRadio Music Festival at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas in September 2011. Remind anyone else of that poodle-esque look Christina Aguilera sported back in 2002?

Two-tone color can be fresh and stylish. Or it can be blue and platinum blonde. In October 2011, Nicki went for the latter of the two.

Nicki won Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album for Pink Friday at the November 2011 American Music Awards. And she did so in this curly pink, Little Bo Peep-esque hairstyle.

Quite frankly, Nicki’s long, curly hairstyle isn’t the only thing we hate about this look worn while performing on NBC’s Today Show in August 2012. Ugh.

Tinges of pink and green and a bedazzled cap accessorized Nicki’s voluminous ‘do at the September 2012 Video Music Awards in Los Angeles.

Nicki traded in her crazy color for a platinum blonde Barbie doll look at the American Idol Premiere Event in January 2013. Let the scrapping with Mariah Carey commence.

I’m actually in love with the soft curls Nicki wore to the Elton John AIDS Foundation 21st Academy Awards Viewing Party in February 2013. If only she had chosen a look with covered roots.

While Nicki is certainly not done changing her bold looks, the public has gotten to see a more natural side of the rapper as of late. The April 2013 issue of Elle magazine showed the singer with a nearly nude makeup look. And prior to that, Nicki tweeted this photo of her natural, wig-free locks with the hashtags #LongHairDontCare #HangTime #ImaWearItOutWhenItTouchesMyASS. It may be a while before we get to see this natural look at an awards show, but we can’t wait to see what comes next.
