Alicia Keys’ #NoMakeup Photos are the Most Empowering Thing You’ll See All Day
Alicia Keys said "no more" to wearing makeup, and her reason why will empower you to toss aside your foundation and eye shadow.
In a heartfelt essay on LennyLetter.com, Alicia Keys explained why she no longer plans to wear makeup.
She starts off by asking at what point in life people (especially girls) try to be perfect, recalling her own moment in second grade when she "pulled her beautiful big hair back into the tightest ponytail" to contain it. She also draws from her time in junior high school, when all the popular girls wore makeup and she felt she had to do the same.
"It's another moment where some piece of your realizes that to fit in or be thought of as beautiful, you have to cover up to be a bit closer to perfect," she says.
Keys then talks about how she started to cover up and "become a chameleon" for the entertainment industry to consider her as beautiful. But not anymore. She's done with that.
She walked into her first shoot for her new album after time at the gym, when her photographer, Paola, insisted she shoot her right then and there.
"I'd just come from the gym, had a scarf under my baseball cap, and the beautiful photographer Paola (never met a Paola I didn't like) said, "I have to shoot you right now, like this! The music is raw and real and these photos have to be too!"
At first Keys was nervous, but with the just a white background, herself and the photographer she said "it is the strongest, most empowered, most free, and most honestly beautiful that I have ever felt."
Since that moment, Keys decided to no longer wear makeup.
"I felt powerful because my initial intentions realized themselves. My desire to listen to myself, to tear down the walls I built over all those years, to be full of purpose, and to be myself! The universe was listening to those things I’d promised myself, or maybe I was just finally listening to the universe, but however it goes, that’s how this whole #nomakeup thing began."
And Keys stayed true to her word. Since the shoot, she's gone makeup-less for Vanity Fair and Fault magazines—even her husband is on board, posting this picture and sweet Instagram post supporting her.
"You look 19 without make up. My fav pic #vanityfair. The fact that this is a new pic"
We have to agree with Kasseem Dean, aka Swizz Beatz, this is definitely the strongest we've ever seen Keys. And with more and more celebrities posting #nomakeup photos (and looking gorgeous without it) we tend to think Keys' wish, "I hope to God it's a revolution," is coming true.
And to that we have one thing to say: HELL YES!
