How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes
There’s nothing more satisfying than saying buh-bye winter and hello spring with the annual clean. While we may focus on the obvious places in the home, we often neglect the most important (and easiest) place to clean: our makeup brushes. Without proper care, our beloved beauty tools can become our worst nightmare, transporting acne-causing bacteria between your makeup and skin. Yuck! Remember clean tools make for clean skin. Discover how to clean your makeup brushes and learn simple storage solutions to keep tools clean.
Wash your brushes every week. As we know, quality makeup brushes can be expensive. To ensure their shape will last for years, wash with a gentile or mild soap at least once a week. Gentle shampoo or antibacterial hand soap and lukewarm water will do the trick. Massage the soap through all of the bristles (not just the tip of the brush) then rinse until the water runs clean. Check out this video for how to clean your makeup brushes.
Lay the brushes to dry. Using a paper towel or dry cloth, gently blot the bristles to remove excess water. To protect the shape of the brush, lay brushes on a table and let the bristles hang off the edge of the table. This way, you won’t end up with one side of your brush flat as a pancake after it’s dry.
Clean your tweezers and lash curlers. These tools are often neglected in the cleaning process, but need proper TLC, too. On a bi-weekly basis, spray your tweezers and lash curlers with a simple alcohol-based brush cleaner and wipe with a clean towel.
Replace powder puffs. Powder puffs are a prime place for bacteria to grow and sit on your makeup. That’s why it’s critical to clean the puff once a week (same technique as washing your brushes) and consider buying a new powder puff by the time you make it to the end of your compact.
Invest in cosmetic bags. To protect from dust and to help stay organized, invest in cosmetic bags for storing all your beauty tools and cosmetics. Cosmetic train cases are also a great investment if you frequently travel.
