I Wore Blue Lipstick For A Day And I Felt Like A Total Baddie
by Taylor Borde
Who knew all this could come from a tiny, beautifully-packaged lipstick?
Disclaimer: When it comes to makeup, I’m more of a swipe of mascara and coverup girl, spending all my hard-earned money on the latest serum or Korean beauty drop. Every now and then I’ll rock a dark red lip to dinner and drinks with the girls, but I generally stay far away from anything super bright on a day-to-day basis. Which is why I wasn’t jumping to try Fenty Beauty’s Ya Dig?!, a bright periwinkle blue lipstick. Of course it looks good on Rihanna (honestly what doesn’t), but how would this bold lip color look on my light olive complexion?
It’s no secret that blue lipstick has been a serious makeup trend in the fashion industry for the past year. Runways and red carpets ran rampant with blue-lipped models and celebs. Gucci’s Resort 2017 collection fueled the blue crush with extraordinary shades of denim lipstick walking down the catwalk. Months before, Italian designer Marco de Vincenzo’s models got daring with electric indigo lipstick and blue eyeliner. Celebrities were quick to jump on this statement makeup: Beyoncé posting navy lips on Instagram, lip kit queen and new mom Kylie Jenner rocking a shimmery blue shade, Rihanna teasing Fenty Beauty’s new lipstick release wearing Clapback, and most recently Lupita Nyong’o stealing the London Star Wars premiere with a stunning metallic blue lip.
After doing my due diligence and researching exactly how to style this exotic color, I bravely swiped the intense shade on my lips before heading to work for an entire day.
I was pleasantly surprised that sporting this intense shade for a whole day wasn’t uncomfortable—it was actually empowering! More often than not, my coworkers complimented my makeup, insisting that I “really pull off” bright blue lipstick and giving me a much-needed confidence boost. Even when I ventured to the cafeteria for lunch among all the other, non-beauty departments, I didn’t receive any weird stares, contrary to my initial fear. At times I myself forgot I was wearing such a bold color, thanks to the insanely creamy and soft finish of the Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipsticks.
Before I could retire to my cozy apartment and wash away the day’s experiment, I needed to make a quick Target run. Not many people at work reacted negatively because they knew I was testing out blue lipstick, but the general public is another story. But to my amazement, only one grumpy-looking cashier gave me the side eye. Just one!
When I finally went to wipe off my makeup, I hesitated to take off the blue lipstick that I was dreading only nine hours before. Pastel periwinkle may not be my ideal shade, but it did bring me a sense of cool-girl confidence that no other lip color ever has, not even my brightest red.
However, wearing such a bright, pigmented color does require some preparation to pull it off. First, make sure to keep the rest of your makeup simple and clean. Same for your outfit. No crazy prints or colors to avoid any other distractions. And don’t forget to exfoliate your lips—you don’t want dry or chapped lips to be the focal point. Lastly and most importantly, have a heavy dose of confidence and no one can make you feel out of place.
Are you ready to take on this statement makeup trend? Here are some of my favorite blue lipsticks for a refreshing burst of empowerment and a day filled with unexpected compliments.
