I Wore Rainbow Mascara For A Week—And My Favorite Shade Was A Bold Surprise
by Taylor Borde
See how I take on this ’80s trend with bright, rainbow lashes from Urban Decay’s Double Team Special Effect Colored Mascara collection and shop all my favorite shades.
We’ve already seen technicolor animal print and banana hair clips make a return to NYFW from the ’80s, but never expected the rainbow mascara beauty trend to re-emerge at center stage in all it’s neon glory. Models at Pucci, Dries Van Noten, and emerging brand Area sported colorful lashes in all shades down the runway. And with Rihanna endorsing hot pink mascara while hosting the Fenty x Puma pool party at Coachella, it’s time to take on this risky beauty trend ourselves.
With Urban Decay’s Double Team Special Effect Colored Mascara at my side—which features five brilliant colors for lashes and brows—I dove headfirst into my week-long experiment with rainbow-colored lashes. (We’ll save colorful brows for another time.) The brand isn’t the first to release colored mascara. Marc Jacobs, YSL, and the drugstore makeup favorite NYX have all come out with their own vibrant formulas, but Urban Decay’s collection goes one step further with a cream and coordinating shimmer shade on each tube. Black lashes aside, I set out to find the best colorful mascara for this brown-eyed girl.
Read on to find out my clear winner and shop rainbow mascara to find your most-flattering lash shade, along with my five-day documentation of this bold throwback makeup trend.
Monday: Silver/Gold Mascara
I started the week off with UD’s Dime/Goldmine shade, a metallic silver and gold mascara with dual-ended spools. Luckily, I forgot and applied my usual black mascara before I left for work because, on it’s own, I don’t think these colors would show up very well. I wanted to dip my toes into colorful mascara with the most neutral option, but it actually ended up being the most uncomfortable for me to wear due to the light silver shimmer actually hiding my lashes instead of highlighting them.

Tuesday: Aqua Mascara
Hands down—Deep End was my favorite shade of the week. The bright peacock is a natural complement to my chocolate brown eyes. I also prepared more for today’s look, lining my upper and lower lashline with a similar ocean blue shadow and popping a bit of copper into the corners to brighten up my eyes. That said, this was a very bold look compared to my usual minimal makeup look, but have to admit the bright color was very flattering to my natural eye color without being too overwhelming. People couldn’t even notice I was wearing colored mascara unless we were standing close, face to face.

Wednesday: Purple Mascara
I went for more of a smokey look today, lining my lashes with a rich plum shadow and my inner corners with the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Heartless, a light frosted pink cream eyeliner. The purple didn’t pop as much as I thought, but was a fun change from traditional black.

Thursday: Pink Mascara
I have to admit, I was both excited and scared to try this hot pink mascara. Channeling my inner Rihanna, I rocked this shade on my top and bottom lashes, with the rest of my makeup fairly neutral. Once again, I lined my lashes with a similar shimmering pink to give my thin lashes more emphasis. Though not anything crazy, I was a big fan of this subtle pink look and can see myself playing around with this shade again in the future.

Friday: Blue Mascara
For my last day testing out colored lashes, I decided to keep it really simple, wearing only the blue mascara on my eyes. I wanted to see just how noticeable the bright turquoise shade was on its own, as the rest of the colors didn’t stand out without a little help from eyeshadow or eyeliner.
This true blue is another winner in my book. It added a touch of color to my normal makeup without looking out of place in the office. After a week of batting my multi-color lashes, I have to say I see the hype behind the rainbow makeup trend: It’s an easy way to punch up your everyday eye look with a subtle dose of color with every eyelash flutter.
